81 years ago today, the longest continuously running radio program in America first took to the airwaves on WSM 650 AM in Nashville, Tennessee. It was called the WSM Barn Dance, and was a spin-off of George D. Hay's program National Barn Dance originating on WLS in Chicago. Within a couple of years the show became better known by the name it still goes by today, The Grand Ole Opry.
